Blue John stone is Britain's rarest natural formation. Discovered by the Romans, it is found in nodules lining the inner walls of cavities in the limestone hills of Castleton. Skilled craftsmen work the Blue John into gold and silver jewellery using traditional methods in the Castleton workshop. Outlets for this fine jewellery are at Speedwell Cavern, Greystones, Toll Bar and Harrison and Harrison. Speedwell Cavern offers a guided tour by boat around the cavern. Cavern and shops open every day.
